Alice hopes to gain revenue with selling of its effluent water

— In an effort to gain revenue for Alice as well as ease the South Texas water supply in a time of drought, the city is looking to sell its effluent water to companies conducting hydraulic fracking.

"It would be more prudent, even if we aren't in a drought, to use effluent water rather than treated water," said Alice City Manager Ray De Los Santos. "Since we are in a drought, it's even more important."

The city is seeking requests for proposals to find energy companies that want to purchase effluent, the wastewater produced at the sewer plant. Alice produces 2.5 million to 3.5 million gallons of effluent daily.

The wastewater is treated to match the quality of water in lakes and ponds so it's safe to release in creeks, according to state standards. Currently, the effluent is only used to water the golf course. De Los Santos said that takes up little of the city's supply.

He said the city wants to prove that private enterprise and governmental bodies can coexist.
