Darien beats Westhill in OT in FCIAC boys soccer quarters

DARIEN -- It took 100 minutes of soccer, but No. 3 Darien advanced to the semifinals of the FCIAC boys soccer tournament with a 3-2 overtime win over No. 6 Westhill Friday night. Darien moves on to face No. 2 Trumbull at Fairfield Ludlowe High School in Tuesday's semifinals.

Darien's Eric Kanigan scored his second of two goals on a penalty kick with 1:07 remaining in the first overtime, and the Blue Wave held on for the win, despite several quality scoring opportunities for the Vikings.

For Darien, which held a 2-0 lead at halftime, the game was a roller coaster from start to finish.

"I was just trying to keep a clear head. You don't get many opportunities like that, so I just wanted to pick my spot and put it there," Kanigan said. "I think going into halftime we were a bit overconfident, and we saw that when they got the two goals. We should have closed them down."

Kanigan's heroics were made possible by the hard work of teammates Spencer McMullin and Brennan Blanca, who sustained a minor injury on the play. McMullin dribbled the ball to the outside before sending it back to Blanca, who was tripped up by Westhill, resulting in the penalty shot. According to Kanigan, Branca would have taken the penalty kick had he not been injured on the play.
