Escalade reports lower sales in third quarter

— Evansville-based Escalade Inc. saw sales of its sporting goods products drop last quarter, and the company as a whole reported a net loss of $380,000 (3 cents per share).

During the same period last year, Escalade reported net income of $1.2 million (9 cents per share).

Escalade said most of its third-quarter loss was related to its planned replacement of its computer system. The company took an accelerated depreciation expense of $2.2 million during the quarter. The company said it plans to record an equal amount of depreciation expense again this quarter.

Escalade operates two separate business segments. Most of its revenue comes from its sporting goods business, whose products include Goalrilla basketball hoops and Woodplay wooden play structures. The company also makes shredders and other products in its information security and print finishing business.

In the sporting goods business, revenues dropped 2.6 percent from last year, to $20.2 million. The company said this drop was mostly because economic uncertainty drove retailers to reduce their inventory levels last quarter, thus ordering fewer Escalade products.
