No winter tires on Manitoba ambulances

Not one of Manitoba's 160 ambulances has winter tires, and that endangers everyone on our roads, the provincial paramedics' union has warned.

The province's 11 regional health authorities (RHA) all use all-terrain, all-weather tires on their Crestline Coach "Fleetmax" ambulances.

That puts others at risk -- ambulance crews, patients and other drivers -- said Lois Wales, president of the Manitoba Government and General Employees' Union (MGEU).

Wales said all regional health authority ambulances should have winter tires. They can hit 140 kilometres per hour responding in emergencies, she said.

"It could be beautiful outside, but it could also be a blizzard. We don't get to choose the weather we respond in," Wales said.

"I think for the public's safety, patient care and paramedics, that (winter tires) should be considered."

She said it's not just paramedics and patients who are at greater risk if ambulances are not equipped with winter tires, but the general public on the highways.
