Somebody told me today that he used Armoral on his plug leads to make them look good and also to reduce the build up of crud and moisture, and hence reduce tracking.

Do you think this is a good idea or BS?

A: Armor All contains a plasticizer that softens plastic. That's what keep a vinyl dash from cracking. But spark plug wire insulation is made out of silicone. Armor All won't do any good and may actually attract more dirt than leaving them alone.

Another Anti-HIV Gel Fails

Part of a clinical trial involving an antiretroviral drug for preventing HIV infection in women has been halted prematurely, after an interim review found that one of the treatments was ineffective.

According to the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID), sponsor of the so-called VOICE trial taking place in southern Africa, women using a vaginal gel containing 1% tenofovir had the same rate of HIV infection as those assigned to placebo.

The trial's data safety and monitoring board recommended that that portion of the trial be stopped. Another part of the study will continue; in that arm, oral tablets containing tenofovir alone (Viread) or in combination with emtricitabine (Truvada) are being tested as prophylaxis against HIV in uninfected women.

Several other topical products for HIV prevention have also failed to show clear efficacy in clinical trials. Last year, an agent called PRO2000 showed no benefit in a phase III study . In fact, one arm of that study was also stopped early when an interim analysis found no benefit for a high-dose form of PRO2000.
